25 People trapped under snow after Himalayan avalanche

Authorities report that at least 25 people remain trapped under snow following an avalanche in Uttarakhand, India, on Friday, which was triggered by heavy snowfall in the region. The avalanche struck a construction camp located near India’s mountainous border with Tibet, injuring at least three workers.

“The avalanche rescue operation by the Army is ongoing despite challenging weather conditions and continued snowfall,” the Indian Army announced on social media platform X.

Initially, 57 construction workers were trapped by the avalanche. Authorities confirmed that 22 individuals were able to escape, while rescue teams successfully pulled 10 others out of the snow. Three of the rescued workers were transported to a military hospital for medical treatment, according to senior police officer Rajeev Swaroop.

Deepam Seth, the state’s top police officer, stated to broadcaster NDTV, “It has been snowing with strong winds. The roads are completely blocked, and we have deployed snow cutters to clear the routes.”

Avalanches and landslides are common occurrences in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas, particularly during the winter months.
