UN Envoy says substantive talks and CBMs expected after Erhürman visit

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Angela Holguín, met with President Tufan Erhürman at the Presidential Palace this afternoon ahead the trilateral leaders meeting scheduled for tomorrow in the UN buffer zone.

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s meeting, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy said discussions with President Erhürman had been constructive and focused on preparing the ground for the trilateral meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader, Nikos Christodulides.

She noted that both sides’ concerns on how to resume talks were reviewed in detail, adding that tomorrow’s meeting was expected to be substantive rather than procedural.

Holguín said she anticipated possible developments on confidence-building measures, expressing hope that the leaders would be able to deliver tangible steps aimed at strengthening trust between the two sides.

The UN envoy underlined that the process would continue beyond the meeting, stressing the importance of maintaining dialogue and sustained engagement as efforts move forward under UN auspices.

Tomorrow’s joint meeting with the participation of both leaders is set to take place at the UN Chief of Mission’s Residence inside the UN Protected Area, at 11:00 am.
