Ataser: “We can overcome many issues through cooperation”

Girne Municipality and Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Municipality signed a protocol regulating the infrastructure and superstructure works on Piyale Paşa Street, located at the border of Girne and Alsancak. The protocol was signed by Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul and LAÇ Mayor Fırat Ataser.

PIYALE PAŞA STREET GETS A MAKEOVER

Due to the fact that part of Piyale Paşa Street falls within the boundaries of Girne Municipality and the other part within the LAÇ Municipality, investments have not been made on the street for years. However, with the protocol signed today between Girne and LAÇ Municipalities, the infrastructure and superstructure issues of Piyale Paşa Street will be resolved.

The protocol aims to address all infrastructure and superstructure needs, including the rainwater drainage system, water, telephone, and electricity lines, as well as road asphalting. According to the agreement, Girne Municipality will be responsible for the road asphalting works, while LAÇ Municipality will handle the infrastructure works.

ŞENKUL: “TWO MUNICIPALITIES WILL WORK TOGETHER”

Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul, speaking at the protocol ceremony, highlighted the infrastructure issues of Piyale Paşa Street and the region, making significant statements. He emphasized that residents of Piyale Paşa Street have legitimate complaints, especially due to the lack of infrastructure, and noted that both municipalities would cooperate to solve this issue.

After LAÇ Mayor Fırat Ataser took responsibility for the infrastructure works, Şenkul stated that Girne Municipality would complete the superstructure works.

He also pointed out that these issues are not limited to Piyale Paşa Street, as similar infrastructure deficiencies are present in the eastern parts of Girne. Şenkul explained that the boundaries in the region were determined based on old maps using river limits, which led to part of the street falling under Girne’s jurisdiction and the other part under LAÇ Municipality, resulting in a jurisdictional conflict.

However, Şenkul stressed that thanks to the proactive approaches of the municipalities, this conflict was overcome, and faster decision-making became possible through cooperation. He added that this collaboration could serve as a model for other projects, and infrastructure and superstructure works would progress simultaneously.

ATASER: “WE CAN SOLVE MANY ISSUES THROUGH COOPERATION”

Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Mayor Fırat Ataser emphasized the importance of inter-municipal cooperation during the protocol ceremony. Ataser stated that the main goal is to demonstrate the capacity of municipalities to solve problems by working together within a framework of cooperation.

Ataser said, “Municipalities believe they can overcome many issues through cooperation, not only regarding roads but also on broader matters. We have always emphasized the need for municipalities to have expanded authority and increased resources to produce swift and effective solutions.”

Highlighting the significance of the protocol signed today, Ataser stated, “The road we signed the protocol for may not be large, but it is valuable in showing how successful this cooperation can be. As municipalities, we are united; the problems of all municipalities are our problems as well.”
