“Brain Pacemaker” surgeries in TRNC offer new hope to patients with Parkinson’s

Health Minister Dr. Hakan Dinçyürek has announced a breakthrough in Parkinson’s disease treatment within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), with a series of successful “brain pacemaker” surgeries performed at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital.

The procedure, carried out for the ninth time in the past 10 months, offers new hope to patients who do not respond to medication.

Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek on Monday emphasized that Parkinson’s patients, especially those unable to walk or with severely limited mobility, have seen a return to normal life through this advanced surgical method.

“For patients unresponsive to medication, we are restoring quality of life with electrode and pacemaker implants in the brain,” he said, noting that such surgeries are only available in select centers worldwide.

Highlighting a recent case, Dinçyürek shared that a 50-year-old patient who had been living with Parkinson’s for 30 years experienced significant improvement shortly after surgery, despite being in an advanced stage.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Çağın Ozankaya from Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital also commented on the achievement, saying, “With nine successful operations in the last ten months, we’ve made significant progress. We’ve now reached a point where we can represent our country at international medical congresses. This is a great source of pride.” brt
