National Unity Party (UBP) Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has voiced grave concern over escalating regional tensions, warning that the Israel-Iran conflict — now involving nuclear sites and the United States — has created a dangerous situation for the entire region.
In a statement regarding recent developments, Hasipoğlu stressed that the involvement of nuclear facilities in the missile exchanges had further heightened alarm. He criticized the United Nations for failing to uphold its peacekeeping duties, stating, “The UN has shifted from being a peacekeeping force to an observation council, merely watching US-Israel operations unfold.”
Drawing parallels with Cyprus, Hasipoğlu noted that the Turkish Cypriot people had long experienced the consequences of UN inaction, particularly in the pre-1974 era when Security Council resolutions failed to stop Greek Cypriot aggression.
He argued that the same bias continues today through a negotiation process structurally tilted in favour of the Greek Cypriot side.
“The UN has consistently avoided holding the Greek Cypriot side accountable for its rejections. Had it done so, a just solution may already have been achieved,” he said, referring to the deadlock in federation-based negotiations since 1979.
Hasipoğlu also welcomed the remarks made by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at the 51st Session of the OIC, in which he referred to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). “As the world and our region become increasingly volatile, Türkiye once again proves to be the only reliable guarantor and true supporter of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.
He thanked Türkiye and Minister Fidan for highlighting the TRNC’s isolation and calling for direct international engagement. Hasipoğlu also voiced hope that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation would further strengthen its political and economic ties with the TRNC.
Addressing recent military activity by the Greek Cypriot administration, Hasipoğlu warned of the growing danger posed by unilateral arms deals and defense agreements with countries such as the US, Israel, and France. “Turning Cyprus into a military base serves no one’s peace or security,” he said.
Hasipoğlu reiterated that Türkiye’s active and effective guarantee remains a red line for the UBP. “So long as we have a say, we will continue to defend the existence and security of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he declared.
