Wind production and unit in Dhekelia covered the electricity needs

Harry Zavallis, Assistant Director of Operations of the Transmission System Operator Cyprus (TSOC), said that the drop in demand that followed the decrease in temperatures, the availability of a production unit in Dhekelia and wind production, made it possible to cover electricity needs without problems in recent days.

Asked if problems could arise in the coming period, Zavallis said that the data of the last three days shows that we are moving at normal demand levels for the summer season. As a result, he added, needs are being covered. He noted, however, that the possibility that there are needs for cuts cannot be ruled out in case there is another excessive rise in temperature.

After August 15th, he pointed out, the temperature is generally not that high that would make demand increase in an excessive manner, apart from rarer cases where a heat wave was observed in September.

In the event that very high temperatures are again recorded, when people return from their holidays, he said, problems may arise again, depending on the units that will be available.

“The units, after the summer load, will have to go out for maintenance, they cannot work continuously,” he noted.

Now, he said, the expected demand will be at around 910 megawatts, which can be covered without a problem, as conventional production reaches 1030 megawatts and is supplemented by wind production of approximately 50-70 megawatts.
