Airfare prices discussed

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı emphasized that airline ticket prices are high due to taxes.

“Having some flights to Ercan Airport operated with larger aircraft will create the opportunity to find cheaper tickets. However, the definitive solution lies in the government relinquishing a portion of the revenue it generates from taxes,” said Arıklı.

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı received Kerem Sarp, General Manager of A Jet, a Turkish Airlines organization, and his accompanying delegation.

They discussed the new terminal of Ercan Airport, flights between Northern Cyprus and Türkiye, and tourism issues.

Kerem Sarp expressed the airline industry’s desire to sell cheap tickets, but highlighted the challenge of high taxes, specifically mentioning a tax of ₺1,300 per passenger for flights to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

As a response, A Jet has decided to increase their flights to the TRNC by 50 percent, with the expectation that this may slightly reduce ticket prices.

Minister Arıklı acknowledged the efforts made to reduce ticket prices but expressed the need for a solution, suggesting that the state should consider reducing taxes to attract more tourists and provide cheaper tickets.

Arıklı emphasized that a reduction in taxes would benefit both the country and its tourism industry.
