Baf resistance

The 61st anniversary of the Baf Resistance, which has an important place in the history of the Turkish Cypriot national struggle, and those who were martyred in this resistance were commemorated with a ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the new Gazi Baf Martyrs Monument built under the leadership of Gazi Baf Solidarity Association.

The ceremony began with the laying of the wreaths, a minutes silence and the flags being raised to the reciting of the national anthem.

Speech emphasizing the importance of the day was delivered by the Chairman of the Gazi Baf Solidarity Association Turgay Tokel.

Then Prime Minister Ünal Üstel for his part pointed out that the Baf Resistance has an important place in the history of the Turkish Cypriot struggle and thanked everyone who contributed to the realization of a permanent monument worthy of the martyrs on the 61st anniversary of the resistance.

Noting that March 9 is a very meaningful day, Üstel said, “March 9 is the day to commemorate the mujahids who struggled for existence without weapons but with their faith, without tanks and rifles but with courage and the martyrs who reached the rank of martyrdom”.

Explaining that as someone who lived those days, he knows very well what the Turkish Cypriot people suffered and what struggles were made until the Turkish peace operation was realized, Üstel stated that the new monument is a structure that tells how the Turkish Cypriots have come to this day.

President Ersin Tatar for his part emphasized the great significance of the March 9 resistance in the struggle to eliminate the Turkish Cypriot people.

Recalling the immense suffering endured in the past, President Tatar stated that freedom was achieved through the Cyprus Peace Operation.

“Once again, I want to remind the whole world from Güzelyurt about the suffering endured by the Turkish Cypriots, the price they have paid and how crucial our sovereignty is for us at this stage,” said Tatar.

Highlighting the importance of Türkiye’s guarantorship for the Turkish Cypriot people, Tatar stated that they would only sign an agreement based on sovereignty.

He also pointed out that strengthening the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a duty of gratitude to the martyrs and commemorated all the martyrs with respect.
