Complex elections, soaring temperatures, and a popular band’s concert in Athens are creating a trifecta of challenges for Cyprus’ Electoral Service and political candidates aiming to boost voter turnout.
With the Coldplay concert falling on the same dates as the elections, many Cypriot fans are faced with a choice between travelling for the concert or casting their votes.
According to sources, there is a growing concern within party headquarters that the dual elections may fall short of increasing voter participation, with the intricate electoral process being a potential contributing factor.
Regarding the weather, temperatures are forecast to drop on Sunday, but the current heat waves have already prompted many to head to beaches and tourist resorts on the weekend.
For context, the 2019 European Parliament elections in Cyprus recorded the highest abstention rate, with only 44.99% of registered voters casting their ballots.
Specifically, out of the total 641,181 registered voters, only 288,483, or 44.99%, cast their votes, while 352,698, or 55.01%, abstained. (in cyprus)
