CTP leader Erhürman criticizes policies undermining property commission

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman has underlined that the Turkish Cypriot side will not be the party that abandons the negotiating table, stating that Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides will be met with the Turkish Cypriot people’s determination for a solution when negotiations resume.

In a statement concerning the Cyprus issue and the ongoing property disputes on the island, Erhürman emphasized that the final resolution of property matters lies within the framework of a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

He described the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) as a crucial reflection of the Turkish Cypriot side’s willingness to find a solution within the scope of international law, rooted in both European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings and the principle of bi-zonality.

Referring to recent arrests in the south, entry bans for Turkish Cypriot businesspeople in some countries, and the growing international debate over the IPC’s effectiveness as a domestic legal remedy, Erhürman said these developments stem from a mentality that ignores international law and undermines the bi-zonality principle.

He accused this approach-summed up by the dismissive phrase “just go ahead, don’t be afraid”-of damaging the legal ground achieved through the ECHR’s recognition of the IPC.

“We will not be the side that flees the table,” he said. “Christodoulides will face a people committed to a solution. The rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, as one of the two co-founding partners of this island, cannot be trampled under insular-style policies and international isolation.”
