The main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has issued a strong statement expressing deep concern over the potential for Cyprus to be drawn into the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, warning that the island must not become part of any regional war.
In a written statement regarding the war between Israel and Iran, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) expressed deep concern that this war, disregarding the will of the Turkish Cypriots, has the potential to expand in a way that could engulf Cyprus as well.
The statement said: “Israel, in recent times, has been blatantly ignoring international law and human rights by launching uncontrolled and disproportionate attacks—first by raining bombs on the defenseless Palestinian people and committing crimes against humanity, and now by spreading the war across the entire region and bombing neighboring countries. This is unacceptable.”
The statement noted that the bombings in the region are visible to the naked eye from Cyprus and continued: “Reports that the United Kingdom and the United States are contributing directly or indirectly to this war by using their military bases in Cyprus increase the likelihood of dragging Cyprus into the heart of a firestorm.”
Emphasizing that they will never accept the island of Cyprus becoming part of any war, the statement underlined the necessity of exerting every possible diplomatic effort to ensure the safety, security, and peace of the people. brt
