Cypriot leaders to meet Holguín today

The meeting between Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, is scheduled for 4.00 pm today, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.

Before the meeting with Holguín, the two leaders will visit the Committee on Missing Persons.
After the meeting, they will attend an informal reception hosted by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne.

Erhürman will hold a press conference at the Presidential Palace at 8:00 pm today following the meetings.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s meeting Erhürman emphasized that he will attend the meeting without prejudice and cautioned against placing excessive expectations on this meeting, especially following a prolonged period of stagnation in negotiations.

“My hope is that this meeting will help build the necessary climate for a solution. My efforts will be focused in that direction,” he said.

In statements made in recent days, Christodoulides said that he is going to the meeting with the aim of seeing how the two leaders can create the conditions for the resumption of talks from where they left off in Crans-Montana. He also noted that he is ready to discuss confidence-building measures and that he has several new ideas.
