Cyprus crops devastated by unprecedented frost

The images of frozen crops across Cyprus leave little room for hope among many farmers.

Although the full extent of the damage will become clear in the next two to three days, farmers from free Famagusta to Paphos, especially potato growers, are particularly anxious and fear they have lost a significant portion of their harvest.

In free Famagusta, Paphos and Nicosia, temperatures dropped below zero in the early hours of Monday, and in many plantations, potato farmers estimate that damage could reach 100%.

“We will determine the true extent of the damage in a few days. However, what we witnessed this morning (yesterday) is unprecedented. It’s extraordinary to still see water frozen on potato leaves at 9 a.m.,” Yiannakis Gabriel, chairman of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, told philenews after touring the Famagusta district.
