Cyprus reports second-highest excess death rate in EU for November

Cyprus recorded the second-highest excess mortality rate among European Union member states in November 2024 at 18%, surpassed only by Finland at 18.4%, according to the latest Eurostat data.

The EU’s overall excess mortality rate fell to 5% in November from 7% in October, with approximately 9,700 deaths recorded – 22,000 fewer than in November 2023.

Cyprus has shown persistently high excess mortality throughout 2024, with rates of 16% in September, 21.5% in August, 31.8% in July, and 28.6% in June. The country recorded its highest weekly rate of 30.8% during the second week of November, leading all EU nations.

The Netherlands (13.9%), Germany (13.8%), and Slovenia (13.5%) also reported high excess mortality rates in November, while Malta (-16.1%) and Romania (-12.3%) recorded the lowest figures.

Eurostat’s excess mortality indicator compares current death rates with the 2016-2019 average, encompassing deaths from all causes. The metric has been used to track mortality patterns during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of heatwaves in summer and flu seasons in winter. (incyprus)
