At least 65 pilot whales died after a mass stranding on an island off the coast of Scotland, a marine animal rescue charity said.
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) reported finding 77 pilot whales stranded in shallow waters on Sanday Island in the Orkney archipelago. Sadly, only 12 whales were still alive when rescuers arrived.
The causes of whale strandings can vary, including navigation errors or getting trapped by tides.
Pilot whales, known for their strong social bonds, tend to get stranded together when one of them gets into trouble.
