Erhürman: Leaders must refrain from statements that would escalate tensions

President Tufan Erhürman shared his assessment via his social media account regarding the violations carried out by Greek Cypriot farmers in the buffer zone.

Recalling that one of the proposals in the ten-point package he presented at the negotiating table was the establishment of a mechanism to ensure direct dialogue between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot security forces, Erhürman pointed out that the aim was to enable immediate contact without losing time in the event of potential problems.

Stating that “in the final days of 2025, violations carried out by Greek Cypriot farmers in the buffer zone, and even extending beyond it, caused tension, and that the Greek Cypriot leadership issued accusatory statements using language that is unacceptable,” the President said that they immediately requested reports on the matter and contacted UN officials.

President Erhürman noted that they ensured the relevant authorities engaged in dialogue with UN officials, stressing that their objective was to prevent such tension-escalating incidents from occurring.

“The way to achieve this is for the UN to fully and faithfully implement all agreements and understandings reached so far, and for dialogue mechanisms to function effectively. In our view, the responsibility of leaderships is to strengthen preventive dialogue mechanisms and to refrain from language or statements that would poison the atmosphere or increase tension” he said.
