Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Chairman Tufan Erhürman, in his speech titled “Property Sales to Foreigners” during the General Assembly of the Parliament, stated that the issue of amending the law concerning property sales to foreigners, which has been on the committee’s agenda for some time, has been continuously raised by the CTP for 2.5-3 years.
Erhürman emphasized the importance of land ownership in terms of population planning and economic development planning, stating that failure to make necessary regulations in this regard would also harm the construction sector.
Expressing concern about the preservation of land ownership and sustainable population structure in this tiny country with a very small population, Erhürman stated that the issue became a topic of discussion not as a result of their warnings but rather because it found a place in the Turkish media.
Erhürman noted that the amendment, which contains nothing about protecting population, property, or land, at best, has become slightly better in terms of statistical data. Erhürman argued that the bill would make it easier for foreigners to acquire property compared to the current law and emphasized the necessity of a quota regarding property acquisition, which they have advocated since day one. Without such a quota, Erhürman pointed out, the proportion of TRNC citizens in certain areas could decrease to an extent that cannot be ignored.
