The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman stated that the European Union must clearly acknowledge the existence and rights of Turkish Cypriots.
The leader of the CTP Tufan Erhürman participated in a panel organized by the European Parliament’s Cyprus Office on the occasion of Europe Day.
Erhürman said that the EU could play a catalytic role in resolving the Cyprus issue but emphasized that certain conditions must be met for this to happen.
He noted, “I believe it is necessary to start with some basic assumptions,” and went on to list those assumptions.
Erhürman underlined that the EU must openly demonstrate that it recognizes the existence and rights of Turkish Cypriots.
He also addressed the property issue, saying: “The Annan Plan included arrangements regarding property. If the plan had been accepted, a significant portion of today’s property-related problems would have already been resolved.”BRT
