Erhürman: The most important issue for Turkish Cypriots is political equality

The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman stressed that the most important issue for Turkish Cypriots was political equality, stating, “A solution without this will not be sustainable.”

Regarding the upcoming presidential election, Erhürman noted, “There is a very clear demand for change on the streets. The public sentiment is strongly in favor of change.”

Republican Turkish Party leader Tufan Erhürman made statements regarding the Cyprus issue.

He mentioned that they had not received an invitation to the informal 5+1 meeting expected to be held in Geneva on March 17-18, but acknowledged that a process was currently underway.

“The UN Secretary-General is calling for a multilateral meeting. If there were no hope for a resolution to the Cyprus issue, this effort would not be made” Erhürman stated.

He rejected the idea that this multilateral meeting was merely for appearances, saying that it should not be dismissed as a “token effort.”

However, he also cautioned against expecting that an official negotiation process would automatically follow this meeting.

Stating that if a solution to the Cyprus issue is to be found, it could only be through a loose federation model, Erhürman stressed that a resolution was not only crucial for Turkish Cypriots but also for Greek Cypriots and regional peace.

Reiterating that the most important issue for Turkish Cypriots was political equality, the CTP leader stated, “A solution without this will not be sustainable.”

Regarding the upcoming presidential election, Erhürman noted that the current atmosphere reflected a strong demand for change, stating, “There is a very clear demand for change on the streets. In many places, decisions have already been made. The political landscape is dynamic, and we have eight months ahead. Public sentiment is leaning toward change.”brt
