Erhürman warns of troubling Greek Cypriot approaches linked to EU Council Presidency

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said the Greek Cypriot side’s recent approaches, particularly in connection with the EU Council Presidency, have become increasingly troubling, stressing that violations of Turkish Cypriots’ rights are unacceptable.
Speaking after a meeting with Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz at the Presidential Complex on Friday, Erhürman underlined that Turkish Cypriots are one of the island’s two equal founding peoples, possessing equal sovereign rights. He emphasized that being open to dialogue has never meant relinquishing equal sovereignty, political equality, or fundamental rights.
Erhürman noted that the Turkish Cypriot side has never walked away from negotiations at any point in history, adding that participation at the negotiating table must be based on equality and mutual respect.
The meeting between Erhürman and Yılmaz lasted around one and a half hours and focused on the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations, and regional developments. Following the talks, brief statements were made to the press.
Erhürman described relations between Northern Cyprus and Türkiye as unique and incomparable to relations between any two states, stressing the importance of regular and close contact. He said coordination with Türkiye on the Cyprus issue and foreign policy has been a consistent approach both before and after the election, and has continued steadily since he took office.
Highlighting the broader scope of diplomacy, Erhürman said efforts extend beyond the negotiating table and praised Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic contributions to strengthening the Turkish Cypriot people’s ties with the international community.
Vice President Yılmaz, for his part, said he was pleased to meet Erhürman once again, describing consultations with the President, the Prime Minister, government officials, and other stakeholders as productive. He stressed that relations between Türkiye and Northern Cyprus are rooted in deep bonds of brotherhood rather than conventional state-to-state ties.
Yılmaz reiterated that Türkiye will continue to firmly defend the equal sovereignty rights of the Turkish Cypriot people on all platforms, condemning recent statements by the Greek Cypriot side as inconsistent with historical realities and facts on the ground. He also said Türkiye would continue supporting efforts to enhance the Northern Cyprus’s presence in international platforms, including the Organization of Turkic States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
