Europeans prefer Harris to win US election, even those on the right

A majority of Western Europeans would prefer Kamala Harris to win the U.S. presidential election, according to a YouGov Eurotrack survey released on Thursday.

The poll, conducted across seven European nations, showed Harris leading in voter preference, with particularly strong support in Denmark (81%), Germany (71%), Spain (65%), France (62%), and the UK (61%). Italy showed the lowest support for Harris at 46%, though this was still nearly double those favouring Trump.

Support for Harris crossed political lines, with significant backing from centre-right voters including 89% of Denmark’s Venstre party, 78% of German Christian Democrats, and 58% of British Conservatives.

Even among far-right voters, Harris garnered notable support. In France, 46% of Marine Le Pen voters preferred Harris compared to 31% for Trump, while Sweden’s far-right party voters favoured Harris by 49% to 31%.

However, confidence in Harris’s victory was less certain, with expectations ranging from 43% in Italy to 61% in Germany.

The mid-October survey also revealed widespread concerns about post-election violence if Trump loses, with 73% of Danish respondents and 62-67% in most other surveyed countries believing violence would “definitely” or “probably” occur.

Regarding leadership capability, pluralities across all countries believed Harris would make either a “great” or “good” head of state, ranging from 37% in Italy to 64% in Denmark, while majorities viewed a potential second Trump term negatively.
