The state veterinary services announced on Friday the recall of K. Th. Nikolaou Ltd’s ‘Class A’ eggs after they were found to contain chlorates above the permissible levels.
They said they have informed the company to withdraw and recall all such eggs which have a best before date of October 1, and now urge consumers who have bought such eggs to avoid consuming them and to return them to the place of purchase.
The chlorate levels were found to be above the maximum limits allowed by European Union legislation.
Chlorate consumption can lead to gastritis, nephritis, haemolysis, methemoglobinemia, haemoglobinuria, and acute renal failure.
This is because they limit the blood’s ability to absorb oxygen.
