The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement issued early on Wednesday underscored the UN’s commitment to participate in securing a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue, for the benefit of all Cypriots and future generations.
The statement released by Guterres following his informal dinner with the two leaders in New York expressed regret that despite the involvement of his special envoy Maria Angela Holguin no common ground between the parties had been found.
Guterres encouraged the leaders to reflect on how they might bridge the gap between their positions and rebuild trust to make progress towards a resolution. He urged both sides to consider practical steps that could help in narrowing their differences and advancing the peace process.
The statement also noted that Tatar and Christodoulides agreed to hold another informal meeting under the Secretary-General’s auspices, involving a broader format, to discuss the path forward.
Additionally, the leaders reached a consensus on meeting in Cyprus to explore the possibility of opening new border crossings.
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to achieving a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue that benefits all Cypriots and future generations, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.
