Israel’s security cabinet will meet Tuesday to consider a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, following intense fighting along the Lebanon border since October 2023, Reuters reported.
The proposed deal would see Israeli forces withdraw from southern Lebanon whilst Hezbollah moves heavy weapons north of the Litani River, 25km from the Israeli border. Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers would secure the border zone during a 60-day transition.
A US-led five-nation committee would monitor compliance, with the US guaranteeing support for Israeli military action if Hezbollah violates the agreement.
The conflict, which began when Hezbollah attacked Israeli border towns in support of Hamas, escalated in September when Israel launched a ground offensive. About 3,500 Lebanese have been killed, including senior Hezbollah leaders.
Netanyahu’s government faces pressure to secure the return of 60,000 displaced Israeli border residents. Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon said talks were progressing but Israel would maintain strike capability in southern Lebanon. Lebanese deputy parliamentary speaker Elias Bou Saab indicated no major obstacles remain.
