Meteorology Department Director Sinan Güneş has announced that January 2025 was the driest month recorded in the last 50 years, with a staggering 92% decrease in precipitation.
Speaking to Turk Ajansı Kıbrıs (TAK) on World Meteorology Day (March 23), Güneş warned that 2025 will be a dry year, with an extremely hot summer ahead. He emphasized that global climate change is having a profound impact on the region.
According to Güneş, while February’s rainfall was close to normal, the overall three-month evaluation indicates that 2025 is shaping up to be a dry year. He raised concerns about drought conditions, which pose significant challenges for agriculture and water resources.
“We are experiencing an extended period of very little rainfall. This will be a serious challenge for our country and producers,” he cautioned. Güneş attributed the record-breaking temperatures and drought conditions to global climate change.
Güneş also shared insights into the regional distribution of rainfall over the past four months:
• November 2024: The eastern coast had the least rainfall, while Karpaz received the most.
• December 2024: Central Mesaoria saw the lowest rainfall, with Karpaz again receiving the most.
• January 2025: The eastern coast recorded the least rainfall, while Western Mesaoria had the highest.
• February 2025: The eastern coast experienced the lowest rainfall, while the northern coast had the most.
