Kurtulmuş: TRNC’s role vital for TÜRKPA

During the 14th General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TÜRKPA) held in Astana, Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş underscored the need for deeper unity and inclusivity within the Turkic world, highlighting the significance of participation by observer members such as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

In his address to the Assembly Council, Kurtulmuş stated that the TRNC is an inseparable part of the Turkic world, and its active involvement in TÜRKPA’s activities would contribute significantly to the organisation’s strength and cohesion. “The active participation of our observer members, Hungary and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, will add power to our union,” he said.

Kurtulmuş reflected on the global shift toward a multipolar world and argued that stronger cooperation among Turkic states is now more vital than ever. He stressed that no member of the Turkic family should be left behind in the joint pursuit of shared goals and civilizational progress.

He also praised TÜRKPA’s growing institutional role and called for further efforts to strengthen its capacity and diversify its work, particularly through its model legislation initiatives, which foster legislative convergence among member parliaments.

The meeting, hosted by the Kazakh Parliament, marked the official handover of the TÜRKPA chairmanship from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan. Kurtulmuş also confirmed that the post of Secretary General would transfer from Türkiye to Azerbaijan, thanking outgoing Secretary Süreyya Er for his service and welcoming Ramil from Azerbaijan as the incoming head.

Kurtulmuş concluded by reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to peace, justice, and cooperation across the Turkic world, and emphasised that the TRNC’s growing engagement in TÜRKPA represents an important step toward broader integration and solidarity among Turkic states. brt
