LGBTI+ Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic Discussed!

As part of the Helix Project, the Queer Cyprus Association organized a panel titled “Intersecting Crises, Intersecting Identities: LGBTI+ Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

According to information shared by Queer Cyprus, the panel took place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the Cyprus Turkish Public Servants Union (KTAMS) conference hall.

During the panel, the findings of an academic study conducted under the Helix Project were publicly shared for the first time by Prof. Dr. Şenel Hüsnü Raman and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pelin Karakuş Akalın. The research examined the social, economic, and psychological impacts of the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis on LGBTI+ individuals living in the northern part of Cyprus.

Another speaker, Assist. Prof. Dr. Jorge Júlio de Carvalho Valadas Gato from Portugal, provided regional perspectives on the challenges faced by LGBTI+ communities in Europe and Central Asia during the pandemic. In this way, local data was evaluated alongside international experiences.

Through this panel, the aim was not only to share the research findings related to northern part of Cyprus with the public, but also to create a solution-oriented platform for discussion involving civil society representatives, decision-makers, and media professionals.
