Meat Imports Should Contınue

The Consumer Organizations Confederation (TÜ-ÖRKON) argued that meat imports should continue until price stability is achieved. In a written statement, TÜ-ÖRKON pointed out that despite meat imports, the prices of lamb and goat meat in butchers and markets range from 560 to 900 TL/kg. The statement noted, “The fact that these product prices are not decreasing is clear evidence that the uncontrolled market is falling apart.” It also highlighted that while tomatoes are priced at 7 TL/kg in Turkey, with transportation, dock fees, and customs duties (at a 20% rate) added, they could be sold at 20 TL/kg but are instead being sold for 100 TL/kg. The confederation stressed the need for the government to address this issue, stating, “Our Confederation urgently warns the government to stop this fragmented trade mentality that has shattered trade ethics.” The statement also noted that beef, veal, goat, and lamb meat are marketed only as “beef” and “lamb,” which harms both consumers and producers. TÜ-ÖRKON called on the Ministries of Agriculture and Economy and Energy to conduct inspections.
