Microplastic bag ban set to take effect in 2026

The Department of Environmental Protection has confirmed that microplastic bags with a thickness between 15 and 50 microns will be officially banned starting 1 January 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu stated that the government is taking decisive action as microplastic pollution reaches record levels. He emphasized that urgent and effective measures are now essential to protect the environment.

According to Ataoğlu, the legislative framework for the ban has been finalised and the government’s action plan is already in effect. Public awareness initiatives and the distribution of reusable cloth bags have been carried out across all six districts to support the transition.

Highlighting the importance of reducing plastic consumption and safeguarding natural resources, Ataoğlu urged citizens to cooperate with the upcoming regulation, noting the shared responsibility of ensuring a cleaner environment for future generations.
