Minister of Labor and Social Security Sadık Gardiyanoğlu announced that 578 businesses open on Labor and Solidarity Day, May 1st, were inspected. Gardiyanoğlu stated, “On June 21st, I will inspect the contributions of these businesses to see if they paid their workers double for working on May Day”
Appearing on a live Show on Kanal T prepared and presented by Çilem Dağıstanlı, Gardiyanoğlu discussed the inspections he personally attended on May 1st. Gardiyanoğlu mentioned that they set out with a total of 18 inspectors and conducted inspections from 8:30 in the morning until 18:00 in the evening. “578 workplaces were inspected by 18 inspectors.”
Gardiyanoğlu explained that out of the 578 businesses inspected, reminders about their legal obligations were given to 130 of them. He emphasized that this country is governed by laws and the law is quite clear. “Article 40 of the labor law regulates the operation of private sector businesses on special days, public holidays, stating: ‘Any business can choose to open or close. Those who choose to operate are obliged to pay their employees double the regular wage, as they do on other official holidays.'”
Referring to the deadline for submitting May salaries to the Social Security Department and the Pension Fund, which is June 20th, Gardiyanoğlu said, “We have recorded these 578 businesses. On June 21st, I will personally inspect the contributions of these businesses.”
Gardiyanoğlu stated that their inspections were not just for show, noting that he observed that 85% of businesses from Gönyeli to Nicosia were closed. He mentioned that some restaurants, cafes, and markets were open, but most other companies were closed.
