Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has concluded his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. Government sources report that during the meeting, Mitsotakis expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Secretary-General and his personal envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuélla in restarting talks on Cyprus.
Mitsotakis underscored that the continued division of Cyprus 50 years after the tragedy of ’74 remains an unacceptable situation. He emphasized the need to explore every possible avenue for a Cyprus solution based on UN Security Council resolutions.
The discussion also touched upon Greece’s candidacy for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for 2025-26. Mitsotakis briefed Guterres on Greek priorities, emphasizing Greece’s role as a bridge between the North and South, West and East, given its membership in the EU and NATO as well as ongoing dialogues with countries in the Global South.
