Noam Chomsky, ölüm söylentilerinin yalanlanması üzerine hastaneden taburcu edildi

Noam Chomsky, the renowned American linguist and intellectual, has been discharged from a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil and will continue his recovery at home, the healthcare facility announced on Tuesday.

The announcement follows speculation circulating on social media regarding Chomsky’s health.

Beneficência Portuguesa de São Paulo hospital confirmed Chomsky’s discharge in a brief statement, stating, “Patient Avram Noam Chomsky has been discharged and will continue his treatment at home.” No further details were provided regarding his condition.

The confirmation comes after unsubstantiated reports of the 95-year-old’s death emerged on social media platforms. Chomsky’s wife, Valeria, refuted these claims, assuring Agence France-Presse via email, “It’s a lie, he’s doing well.”

According to Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Chomsky was admitted to the hospital last year following a stroke in June. The incident reportedly left him with right-sided weakness (hemiplegia).

Chomsky, who resides in São Paulo with his Brazilian wife, Valeria, has owned a home in the city since 2015.

Beyond linguistics

Widely considered a founding figure of modern linguistics, Chomsky’s work “Syntactic Structures” (1957) argued for an innate human capacity for language and a universal grammatical framework within the brain.

However, Chomsky’s public intellectual persona transcends his academic achievements. He is renowned for his vocal criticism of US and Israeli foreign policy, as well as the media. A vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and the US invasion of Iraq, Chomsky has also engaged in dialogue with prominent figures of the Latin American left, including Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Arizona, Chomsky previously held a faculty position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
