A fatal traffic accident on the İskele (Trikomo) –Ercan Highway early Thursday morning left one person dead and three others injured, according to the Police Press Office.
The crash occurred near the Karavezirler Petrol Station in Cihangir (Epicho) when a car with license plate NH 396, driven by 64-year-old Edmund Jonathan Cooke, attempted to overtake another vehicle, EF 127, driven by H.A. (57). During the manoeuvre, it collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, YG 445, driven by İ.G. (58).
The force of the impact caused Cooke’s vehicle to strike the front of EF 127 before veering off the road and coming to a stop in a nearby field.
Cooke was taken to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Lefkoşa but died despite medical efforts.
His passenger, 71-year-old A. S., and two passengers from the oncoming vehicle, S.H. (36) and S.R. (38), were also hospitalized and remain under treatment.
Police said the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
