Paphos Municipality has received 1,300 native tree saplings as part of an urban greening initiative.
The donation, comprising 700 saplings from the Forestry Department and 600 from a private nursery, was presented Thursday during a ceremony at the Municipal Hall. The trees will be planted across the city’s parks, squares and public spaces.
The selected species, including wild olive, terebinth, carob, plane and oak trees, are indigenous to Cyprus and adapted to the local climate. “These trees will help preserve our cultural heritage while improving air quality and enhancing our urban landscape,” said Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos.
The ceremony featured presentations by Dr Savvas Iezekiel, Director of the Forestry Department, and Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou. Dr Sofocles Sofocleous, President of the Natural and Cultural Heritage Centre, discussed the significance of traditional trees in urban environments.
Local schoolchildren from B’ Primary School of Paphos participated in the event with a cultural performance. (incyprus)
