The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre sent letters to the newly re-elected President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
He also sent a letter to Ilhan Kucuk who was elected as the President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs.
The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre sent separate congratulatory messages to the newly re-elected President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and Ilhan Küçük who was elected as the President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs.
In his letter to Metsola, Töre congratulated Metsola and evaluated both his General Assembly speech after his re-election as EP President and the statements he made with Greek Cypriot MEPs on July 20.
Töre called on Metsola not to ignore the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Stating that they observe how committed the European Union is to the basic principles of peace, democracy and human rights, Töre stated that with the same commitment, they should take into account the human rights violations and unjust isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
He also underlined that the Turkish Cypriot people and the Republic of Türkiye are not the responsible party of the Cyprus issue.
In his letter, Töre stated that the Republic of Cyprus ignores the fact that it cannot be a member of any international organization in which the Guarantor States, Türkiye and Greece are not members of at the same time, which is clearly stated in the 1960 founding treaties.
Töre called for the recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots by the European Parliament and other EU institutions.
In his letter to İlhan Küçük, who was elected as the President of the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Töre stated that his election to this position as a friend of the Turkish Cypriot people is important for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
He also expressed his belief that Küçük will be effective in making the voice of the Turkish Cypriot people heard in the European Parliament and wished Küçük success in his new duty.
