Police condemn attacks on officers

The Greek Cypriot Police have condemned recent attacks against police officers, stressing that the uniform is not a target, but a symbol of protection, security, and legality. In a statement, the Police emphasized that acts of violence against those working to protect citizens undermine the values of society.

The statement referred to two separate incidents, one in Livadia, Larnaca, and another in Latsia, where police officers were assaulted with firecrackers, fireworks, stones, and other objects while performing their duties.

In Livadia, video footage captured officers being attacked as they attempted to maintain order. In Latsia, police officers were stoned by a group of young people while trying to secure a Fire Service vehicle that was actively extinguishing a fire.

“These attacks against authorities working for the safety and protection of citizens do not honour society,” the Police stated, adding, “Police officers are people too — friends, neighbours, and family members.”

The Cyprus Police Association also condemned the violent incidents, calling them criminal acts that directly endanger people who selflessly serve the community. The association urged the state, parliament, employers, and all responsible segments of society to take immediate action.

“These acts are not just rebellious — they are criminal,” the Association stressed, underscoring that the safety and dignity of police officers is non-negotiable.
