Sea Turtle Habitats in Danger: Joint Warning from LAÇ Municipality and SPOT Turtle Conservation Society

LAÇ Municipality and the SPOT Turtle Conservation Society have issued a joint public warning following a serious environmental violation in the Mediterranean Special Environmental Protection Area. One of the region’s most precious natural treasures—the nesting grounds of sea turtles—is under threat due to the illegal use of motorized vehicles on the beach.

In a statement made by the conservation society, it was reported that while protection teams were on duty, a group of individuals riding ATVs and motorcycles unlawfully entered the beach. Despite repeated warnings, they continued driving along the coastline, endangering both the safety of the conservation staff and the protected habitats of the sea turtles. Even more alarming was the destruction of concrete blocks that had been placed two years ago to prevent vehicle access—blocks that were forcibly removed and broken by the individuals.

Speaking on behalf of the SPOT Turtle Conservation Society, Emel Yeğensoy said, “This incident poses a direct threat not only to our environmental protection efforts but also to the delicate balance of nature. The use of motorized vehicles on the beach is strictly prohibited. We call on the authorities to take immediate action.”

LAÇ Mayor Fırat Ataser emphasized that sea turtles are not only part of nature but also an integral part of the region’s cultural heritage. “Protecting these creatures is a shared responsibility. As LAÇ Municipality, we are fully committed to taking all necessary measures to safeguard the habitats of sea turtles,” he said, urging the public to show sensitivity on the issue.

Mayor Ataser also added that any harmful intervention threatening the lives of sea turtles will be met with legal action without delay, should those responsible be identified.

Protecting nature means protecting our future.
