Police have reported that at least five individuals were seriously injured in a stabbing attack on a busy shopping street in central Amsterdam. The incident occurred near Dam Square in the late afternoon, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and emergency services.
According to authorities, the assailant was apprehended after being injured by a passerby who intervened during the attack. The motive for the stabbings remains unclear, and police cordoned off the area for investigation.
“The suspect was detained with the help of a civilian,” stated police spokesperson Eline Roovers. Emergency services, including several ambulances, were dispatched to the scene, and a trauma helicopter landed to assist before later departing.
The situation also disrupted a city council meeting attended by Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, as officials took precautions in light of the ongoing incident.
This attack is part of a concerning trend in the city, which has seen several stabbing incidents attributed to individuals experiencing mental health issues. In response to rising violence, Amsterdam established a hotline last month for residents to report concerns about irrational behaviour, a measure recommended following an investigation into a stabbing case in which a man was fatally attacked by his neighbour.
Local media reports indicate that the area surrounding Dam Square has since been cordoned off as police continue their investigation.
