Emergency services suspended rail transport in Catalonia on Monday as fresh storms hit Barcelona, as Valencia continues to search for victims of last week’s devastating floods that killed at least 217 people.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced the suspension of all commuter trains in northeast Catalonia, home to 8 million people, following civil protection officials’ request.
Barcelona residents received emergency mobile alerts warning of “extreme and continued rainfall,” with authorities urging people to avoid dry gorges and canals. The storms forced the rerouting of 15 flights at Barcelona’s airport and led to highway closures due to flooding. Classes were cancelled in Tarragona after authorities issued a red alert for rain.
