Success at the country’s first compost facility

The compost produced at the Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Compost Lab, the country’s first composting facility, has reached the packaging and sales stage.

The facility produces compost, firewood, and mulch from green waste in the region, which helps improve soil quality.

The Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality held a press conference at the facility about the project.

The LAÇ Compost Lab, the first composting facility on the island, established with European Union funding under the Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality has reached the desired quality.

After one and a half years of production and product development efforts at the facility in Çamlıbel, the produced compost has reached the packaging and sales stage.

The Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality held a press conference at the facility regarding this development.

The Green Waste and Compost Production Manager and Senior Agricultural Engineer at the municipality, Alper Yalçın, stated that recycling activities were of great importance for both the world and the country.

“Tests are conducted daily. The compost benefits the soil by restoring the humus that the soil has lost, increasing water retention in the soil, and enhancing the activity of beneficial bacteria. It also allows plant roots to better absorb nutrients from the soil. The process of turning waste into compost at the facility takes 4 to 6 months” Yalçın explained.

In his speech, The Mayor of Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality Fırat Ataser stressed that their goal was to recycle green waste into materials like compost and firewood, rather than eliminating it through wild cover methods adding that this approach aimed to both generate income and protect the environment.

“The facility has been successful. Work has been done, and the desired quality has been achieved in production. We have reached the packaging stage, set prices, and created a market. We have sold all the production” Ataser noted.

He also added that their next goal was to implement a project for the separation of household waste at the source.

Following the speeches, members of the press were given a tour of the facility, where they were informed about the production and packaging processes.
