Tatar remembers February Earthquake victims

President Ersin Tatar has issued a message marking the second anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Türkiye on February 6, 2023.

The earthquake, centered in Kahramanmaraş, affected 11 provinces and caused widespread devastation.

In his statement, President Tatar emphasized that, despite two years having passed since the disaster, the pain remains deeply felt:

“The deep wounds of this catastrophic event, which has been described as the disaster of the century, continue to burn within us. The earthquake claimed the lives of over 50,000 people in Türkiye, including 49 of our own citizens, among them the Champion Angels. As a state, we are doing everything in our power to heal these wounds and to keep the names of our lost citizens alive.”

President Tatar also addressed the ongoing legal proceedings related to the disaster, specifically the “İsias Case,” stressing that the TRNC authorities remain committed to ensuring justice:

“We will persist in closely following the legal process known as the ‘İsias Case’ and insist on the realization of justice. Our faith and trust in the Turkish judicial system remain absolute.”

Concluding his message, Tatar expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and the Turkish nation:

“On this painful second anniversary, I commemorate our 49 citizens and all those who lost their lives in Türkiye with deep sorrow and respect. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the Turkish people.”
