President Ersin Tatar evaluated the messages conveyed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the Cyprus issue during his speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
Tatar noted that Erdoğan, following his calls at the 77th and 78th General Assemblies for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the lifting of isolations, delivered another strong message this year.
Reminding that Erdoğan addressed global issues while stressing that Türkiye has rights over its declared continental shelf in the north and west of the island, and that the Turkish Cypriots have rights over the entire island, Tatar noted that Erdoğan pointed out it has been 50 years since the Cyprus Peace Operation and 61 years since the Cyprus issue emerged after the Greek Cypriot side usurped the partnership state of the Republic of Cyprus.
The President underlined Erdoğan’s statement that the Turkish Cypriots and Türkiye have always shown a sincere will for a just, lasting, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue.
Stating that Turkish President Erdoğan emphasized the complete loss of validity of the federation solution model and reiterated that there are two separate states and peoples on the island, Tatar noted that Erdoğan called for the reaffirmation of the Turkish Cypriots’ inherent rights to sovereign equality and equal international status and for an end to their isolation.
He also highlighted the significance of Erdoğan’s invitation to establish diplomatic and political ties and to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
“President Erdoğan has conveyed the cry of the TRNC to the entire world. Türkiye has always stood by the TRNC and has shown the world that the Turkish Cypriots are not alone” Tatar stressed.
Pointing out that the goal of the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, was to incorporate the TRNC into the Greek Cypriot state, the President noted that the opposing side’s policy of severing ties with Türkiye was collapsing.
Stressing that President Erdoğan delivered a strong and important message, Tatar also added that this confirmed the new policy is being carried out on the right path.
Stating that it was time for the world to recognize the realities, he said that a solution should be achieved through the cooperation of the two states, with Türkiye, as a guarantor country, having a say in the matter.

President Erdoğan reiterated the reality of two states and two peoples in Cyprus and invited the international community to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and to establish diplomatic, political, and economic relations.
