Tatar’s says GC leadership’s statements dangerous, jeopardizing regional security

President Ersin Tatar on Thursday drew attention to the dangers posed by recent statements made by the Greek Cypriot leadership, arguing that such statements not only jeopardized regional security and stability but also risked making Cyprus a potential target.

Tatar was speaking before his departure to the UK where he will be holding a series of contacts in  Manchester and London.

As part of his visit, President Tatar will also hold discussions with the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy Maria Angela Holguin in London.

“The Greek Cypriot leader is engaging in irresponsible activities for political gain amidst the ongoing crises in our neighbouring region, threatening peace and security on the island,” President Tatar told reporters at Ercan.

He also accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of exploiting the warnings of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan regarding the misuse of Cyprus for their political agenda.

“The Greek Cypriot leadership dares to criticize the Turkish Armed Forces, which have significantly contributed to peace and security both in Cyprus and internationally. The Peace Operation initiated by Türkiye on July 20, 1974, in accordance with international treaties, brought peace and tranquillity to the island. The current borders have been in place for 50 years, and two communities, two administrations, and two states have coexisted since then. (Pg cont)

Despite the Greek Cypriot side’s provocations, no violent incidents have occurred on the island due to the presence and deterrent role of the Turkish Armed Forces,” he said.

He noted that international actors questioning the need for the system of guarantees specific to Cyprus are now working on similar systems to ensure the end of ongoing conflicts and the continuation of ceasefires.

“It must be understood that the primary demand of all peoples, including those in Cyprus, is security and, consequently, a peaceful environment,” he added.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the peace and tranquillity that has prevailed for 50 years, President Tatar stated that the unilateral actions of the Greek Cypriot leadership do not bind the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

“The Greek Cypriot leadership continues to perpetuate the illusion that their illegally usurped status 61 years ago gives them the authority to make decisions for the entire island,” he said.

“There are two distinct states on the island with clearly defined borders. The Greek Cypriot leadership has no authority or jurisdiction over the TRNC. We, as the Turkish Cypriot side, condemn any actions by the Greek Cypriot leadership that negatively impact our region and disturb our people’s peace. The TRNC supports regional peace and stability and is ready to do its part to end the ongoing humanitarian tragedy,” he concluded.

As part of his contacts in the UK, President Ersin Tatar will meet with Maria Angela Holguin, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General

In Manchester, President Tatar will engage with Turkish Cypriots living in the city and inaugurate a new business.

Following this, he will attend the 7th Cyprus Turkish Cultural Festival in London and participate in various other engagements.

President Tatar is expected to return to Northern Cyprus on Monday after completing his engagements.
