
The Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Ministry is organising the “Zero Waste-Litter Picking Marathon,” aiming to raise public awareness about environmental protection.
The “litter-picking marathon”, organised jointly by the Environmental Protection Department and the Youth Federation, will take place next month.
Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Minister Fikri Ataoğlu, Environmental Protection Department officials, and representatives of the Youth Federation today held a joint press conference to announce the event.
The litter-picking marathon will take place in several regions on Saturdays of next month. The first tournament will be held in Girne on May 4. It will be followed by Lefkoşa on May 11, Gazimağusa on May 18, and Güzelyurt-Lefke on May 25th.
The teams that take part in the event will be awarded in three different categories, “picking up the most litter”, “picking up the most recyclable rubbish” and “picking up the most glass bottles”.
The Litter-picking Champions will be presented awards during an award ceremony, which will take place at the ancient harbour on June 5, World Environment Day, in Girne.
Teams, consisting of four, can apply to take part in the event via the social media accounts of the Youth Federation, the officials said, adding that the total prize money will be 40 thousand TL.
Expressed his hope to see a high level of participation in the event, Minister Ataoğlu said: “We aim to regularly organise this event, which has been launched with youth.
“We hope this project can be an exemplary project to raise public awareness about environmental protection,” he added.
