Türkiye criticizes EU’s Cyprus appointment

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli commented on the European Commission’s decision to appoint a “Cyprus Special Representative,” describing it as an “internal matter of the European Union.”

Responding to a question on the appointment during a press briefing, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli noted that the EU had already lost its neutrality on the Cyprus issue by admitting the Greek Cypriot administration into the bloc in 2004, despite its rejection of the UN Comprehensive Settlement Plan.

“This decision is viewed as an internal matter of the EU,” he stated.

Keçeli further emphasized that the EU has consistently supported the Greek Cypriot side’s claims over the years and added: “In the time since, we have observed that the EU’s biased stance—exclusively backing the positions and claims of the Greek Cypriot side—has become even more entrenched. Nevertheless, we expect that this appointed official will urge the Greek Cypriot side to recognize the realities on the island and help them understand that any future negotiation process must now take place not between two communities, but between two states with sovereign equality.”
