UK Conservative MP Smith renews call for direct flights to TRNC

Iain Duncan Smith, a Member of Parliament from Britain’s ruling Conservative Party, has reiterated his call for the establishment of direct flights from the United Kingdom to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Smith emphasized that the current situation in Cyprus presents significant challenges for many Turkish Cypriots residing in his Chingford and Woodford Green constituencies.

UK Conservative MP Iain Smith, who has been campaigning for direct flights to Northern Cyprus for some time, in a statement issued on Monday said, “My call for direct flights is a support measure for my constituents of Turkish Cypriot descent who need to visit their properties regularly and provide assistance to their elderly relatives in Northern Cyprus.”

He highlighted the need to end what he described as an unjust and restrictive travel ban, indicating that the time has come to address this issue.

In a related development, Muhammet Yaşarata, Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce in the UK, also voiced his support for the campaign.

Yaşarata asserted that the establishment of direct flights would facilitate easier and quicker connections for Turkish Cypriots with the rest of the world, significantly contributing to economic development.

The renewed calls for direct flights come ahead of the UK general elections scheduled for July 4, underscoring the ongoing efforts to address the travel restrictions faced by the Turkish Cypriot community in the UK.
