United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that significant progress has been achieved on four out of six key agenda items at the Cyprus 5+1 informal meeting held in New York.
He highlighted that an agreement on border crossing points is particularly close and that new Confidence-Building Measures will be introduced in the upcoming period.
Speaking after the extended-format Cyprus meeting, Guterres said, “We have made important progress on four of the six main topics. We are especially close to a deal on the issue of crossing points.”
Guterres also confirmed that two new rounds of talks are planned: a trilateral meeting during the UN General Assembly in September, and a new 5+1 session following the presidential elections.
He added, “New Confidence-Building Measures will be brought to the table.” While welcoming the progress, he cautioned that “there is still a long way to go,” and expressed hope for deeper cooperation going forward.brt
