World leaders rallied on Wednesday to congratulate Republican Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election.
This victory capped a stunning political comeback four years after he left the White House.
The election of a new president is not just a big deal for the US – a new leader in the White House can transform the country’s foreign policy and its position towards its friends and foes internationally.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated U.S. President-elect Donald Trump over the phone, the Presidential Communications Directorate said Thursday.
In a statement, the directorate said Erdoğan expressed hope about further enhancing cooperation between Türkiye and the United States.
Erdoğan had previously congratulated Donald Trump on his re-election as the president of the United States on Wednesday.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he appreciated Trump’s commitment to the “peace through strength” approach in global affairs.
“This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer,” Zelenskiy said on X.
In his statement, Netanyahu – who has had a difficult relationship with President Joe Biden – spoke of “history’s greatest comeback”, adding that Trump’s return to office offered a “new beginning for America, a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America”.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “I look forward to working with Trump in the years ahead.”
He added: “From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”
Another NATO ally German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also congratulated Trump on his re-election.
“Germany and the U.S. have successfully worked together for a long time to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens,” he wrote on X.
Newly elected NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also congratulated Trump, saying, “I just congratulated Donald Trump on his election as President of the United States. His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO,” he said in a post on X.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “warmly congratulated” Trump on his re-election.
“I look forward to working with President Trump again to advance a strong transatlantic agenda,” she said.
“Let us work together on a transatlantic partnership that continues to deliver for our citizens. Millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on each side of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our economic relationship,” said von der Leyen.brt
