The Coalition of Volunteers, composed of European leaders, will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Washington today to call on Moscow to end the war.
This development follows US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of his ceasefire call after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The Coalition of Volunteers, composed of European leaders, will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his visit to Washington.
The volunteer leaders will demand that Moscow end the war.
This comes after President Trump withdrew his ceasefire call following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Securing a ceasefire in Ukraine—more than three years after the Kremlin ordered the invasion—had been one of Trump’s main demands before the summit, to which Ukraine and its European allies were not invited.
However, after the meeting, where no clear progress was made, Trump announced that an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine was not possible.
The move was widely interpreted as playing into the hands of Putin, who has long favoured negotiations for a final peace deal.
Speaking ahead of the Washington visit, Ursula von der Leyen said she would invite Zelensky to a meeting in Brussels, where other European leaders would join via video conference.
She added that, at Zelensky’s request, she and other European leaders would then accompany him to the US.
The German government confirmed that Friedrich Merz would be among the European leaders, stressing that he would seek to highlight “the interest in a rapid peace agreement in Ukraine.”
Finland announced that President Alexander Stubb would also travel to Washington.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are likewise set to attend in the US.
