Man sought after alleged kangaroo butchering incident in Deryneia

A 36-year-old man has been remanded in custody for eight days by the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni following his arrest in Deryneia, police said Thursday.

The suspect was detained Wednesday in an apartment building car park shortly after police received reports that two men were butchering a kangaroo in public view using knives.

Authorities discovered plastic bags containing kangaroo parts, an axe and five knives at the scene. A second person reportedly fled the location and remains at large.

During questioning, the suspect claimed he had received the animal from another individual in the Paralimni area. Authorities are now investigating who sold the animal to the suspects.

Police reported the men allegedly intended to consume the kangaroo meat. It remains unclear whether the animal was delivered to them alive or dead.

The kangaroo’s remains have been transferred to veterinary services for post-mortem examination.

Police discovered the suspect was residing in Cyprus illegally after his asylum application was rejected in 2022.

The man faces multiple charges including causing an animal pain, suffering, injury or fear; subjecting an animal to a horrific death; possessing a prohibited animal; and illegal residence in the Republic of Cyprus.
